Creating Community
One way we build community is through the arts, which call us to think, feel and reflect. For immigrants with whom we work, it is a special gift because it frees the spirit and gives rise to expression without the burden or boundary of language. Following are some examples of our community building initiatives:
Youth Programs – Judgment-free programs to awaken the voices of middle/high school girls through painting, dance, poetry, journaling, reading (book club) and drama.
Sin Fronteras Youth Group – Offers high school students a chance to explore their leadership, build healthy relationships and collaborate on community issues they care about. Eighty plus youth meet weekly.
College and Career Access Program – Helps students interested in learning about college, financial aid, scholarships, essay writing and financial planning. Leadership opportunities, retreats and trips to colleges and universities provide helpful information to parents and students.
Arts Programs – Projects in collaboration with professional dancers in which middle/high school students learn to express themselves and understand each other through contemporary cultural dance, culminating in a public performance.
Collaborations with Crealde School of Art, ArtReach Orlando and Disney Helping Kids Shine – Includes photography, art camps, and community murals culminating in local and regional public art displays.
